The Next Wave of Infrastructure Investment
Infrastructure is easy to overlook. It quietly supports everyday life, powering homes, enabling commutes, and making it possible to stream content, work remotely, and stay connected. Most people only notice it when something goes wrong, whether it's a power outage, traffic delays caused by deteriorating roads, or unreliable internet disrupting an important meeting.
Yet the infrastructure that underpins the global economy is entering a period of significant transformation.
Traditionally, infrastructure has referred to physical assets such as roads, bridges, railways, and ports. Today, however, that definition is much broader. Digital infrastructure, including data centers, electricity grids, battery storage, and communications networks, has become equally essential to economic growth and long-term competitiveness.
Global Infrastructure Investment Is Entering a Historic Growth Cycle
According to the PwC-Oxford Economics Global Infrastructure Outlook, cumulative worldwide infrastructure investment is projected to reach approximately $151.1 trillion between 2025 and 2050 to build, modernize, and maintain the systems that support the global economy. (1)
Within that total, the United States is expected to account for a substantial share. Baseline projections estimate approximately $32.7 trillion in infrastructure investment, while achieving benchmark levels comparable to leading global economies would require roughly $42 trillion. Under the baseline scenario, infrastructure spending would increase from 3.3% of GDP in 2024 to approximately 4.3% by 2050. At nearly 22% of projected global investment, more than one out of every five infrastructure dollars could be invested in the United States. (2)
The scale of this investment reflects more than growing demand. It also signals a fundamental shift in how infrastructure is planned, financed, constructed, and managed throughout its lifecycle.
While the investment forecasts are significant, they tell only part of the story. Infrastructure owners, operators, and investors are navigating increasingly complex environments shaped by two powerful forces: unprecedented levels of capital investment and the growing need to coordinate across multiple systems, technologies, organizations, funding sources, and project stakeholders. Successfully delivering large-scale infrastructure projects now requires a level of integration that extends well beyond traditional construction management. (2)
Technology Is Reshaping Infrastructure Investment Priorities
Infrastructure investment has historically focused on expanding transportation networks and supporting population growth. While those priorities remain important, technology is increasingly influencing where capital flows and how new projects are designed.
Artificial intelligence provides one of the clearest examples of this shift. As AI adoption accelerates, demand for high-capacity data centers continues to grow. These facilities require dependable electricity supplies, sophisticated cooling systems, and resilient communications infrastructure capable of supporting continuous operations. (1)
As a result, infrastructure planning is expanding beyond the construction of individual facilities. Investment decisions increasingly consider the broader network of power, connectivity, and supporting infrastructure required to sustain modern digital economies. (1)
Although physical infrastructure remains the foundation, its long-term value is increasingly tied to digital capabilities, operational resilience, and the flexibility to adapt as technology continues to evolve. (1)
Connected Infrastructure Is Driving the Next Generation of Economic Growth
Rather than operating independently, transportation systems, electric grids, and digital infrastructure are becoming increasingly interconnected. Transportation and power infrastructure are expected to remain the largest categories of investment, together representing approximately half of all global infrastructure spending through 2050. (1)
What distinguishes this investment cycle is the growing interdependence across sectors.
The widespread adoption of electric vehicles is increasing demand for charging networks and expanded electrical capacity. Data centers require reliable access to significant amounts of power. Renewable energy development depends on stronger transmission infrastructure and large-scale battery storage to maintain grid reliability. At the same time, industrial automation continues to increase demand for both electricity and high-speed digital connectivity. (1)
This evolution creates opportunities that extend well beyond traditional construction. Engineering firms, manufacturers, utilities, and technology companies are increasingly positioned to benefit as expertise in systems integration, digital infrastructure, and operational efficiency becomes a greater competitive advantage. Infrastructure's Role in Long-Term Investment Portfolios
Infrastructure has historically demonstrated characteristics that may help investors navigate inflationary environments. Recent periods of elevated price volatility have reinforced the potential value of infrastructure as part of a diversified investment strategy. (3)
Many infrastructure assets also possess structural characteristics that may support more stable financial performance. Regulated utilities, for example, often operate within frameworks that include inflation adjustments or mechanisms allowing certain cost increases to be passed through over time. Other infrastructure investments may benefit from contractual agreements that link revenues to inflation or from market positions that provide pricing flexibility as operating costs change. (3)
Operating infrastructure assets may also generate relatively predictable long-term cash flows, offering the potential for stable income over extended investment horizons. (3)
Many assets are designed to operate for decades and are commonly financed using long-term fixed-rate debt, which can help reduce refinancing risk. Because of these characteristics, infrastructure investments may be less dependent on short-term market timing and, in some cases, could be better positioned to navigate periods of broader market volatility. Building Infrastructure for a More Connected Future
As infrastructure investment expands, governments, institutional investors, and private sector organizations are placing greater emphasis on long-term asset performance, lifecycle management, and resilience against operational, cyber, and climate-related risks. Infrastructure planning is becoming increasingly data-driven, with success measured not only by successful project delivery but also by the ability of assets to perform efficiently over their full lifecycle. Artificial intelligence, electrification, and digital connectivity are transforming the role infrastructure plays within the global economy. Rather than functioning as isolated physical assets, infrastructure systems are becoming more connected, potentially providing the opportunity for long-term productivity, economic resilience, and sustainable growth in the decades ahead.
